Your Tower Ridge Ascent Itinerary
Meet at Ben Nevis North Face CP
We like to meet early at 7am this means for just a slightly earlier start we normally get ahead of most parties and means we do not have any waiting around at tower gap for groups to move through. This in my opinion is well worth the little extra time in bed.
Here is a pin - https://maps.app.goo.gl/HL1ViLNRRNMx5eRv5
The walk into the CIC hut and to the start of the route
Normally around 1.5 hour walk on a good track up through the woods and into the main North face valley. Quick drink and a snack before we continue our ascent around the side of the Douglas boulder and onto the ridge itself. If you are lucky on the walk in you will have a good viewpoint of the classic ridges including walking past Castle ridge!
On the ridge
The Ridge normally take around 3-4 hours depending on conditions. The main sections of Tower ridge are Douglas gap, Little tower, Eastern traverse, Great tower, Tower Gap, Final Ridge to the summit. For more more detail click below

The main sections of Tower Ridge on Ben Nevis, as detailed by multiple sources, are iconic landmarks that create the challenge and character of the route. Here are the key sections, listed in the order that climbers typically encounter them:
Douglas Boulder: This large crag is the first significant feature, often bypassed via a gully, although there are direct climbing routes rated as Difficult and Moderate for those seeking more of a challenge.
Douglas Gap: After bypassing or climbing the Douglas Boulder, climbers reach the Douglas Gap. This section marks the start of Tower Ridge proper and requires a tricky chimney climb to continue.
Little Tower: Further along the ridge, the route steepens at the Little Tower, requiring some more technical climbing, though it’s relatively short and straightforward compared to later sections.
Eastern Traverse: This exposed traverse skirts the side of the Great Tower. It’s a crucial part of the climb, often considered a crux due to its exposure and the technicality of the terrain.
Great Tower: The most significant feature on the ridge, the Great Tower is a steep and imposing section. Many climbers take the Eastern Traverse to bypass the most challenging climbing here.
Tower Gap: The most infamous part of the route, Tower Gap, is a deep notch in the ridge. It requires careful downclimbing and a tricky exit, often the psychological crux for many climbers.
Final Ridge to the Summit: After passing Tower Gap, a final scramble leads up easier terrain to the summit plateau, completing the ascent(
These sections make Tower Ridge one of the most sought-after mountaineering objectives in the UK, combining sustained technical difficulty with dramatic exposure.
Summit and traverse to Càrn Dearg - Descent of Ledge route
After summiting Ben Nevis, we take a short descent down the Tourist Track before cutting across to Càrn Dearg and the start of Ledge Route. This classic Grade I scramble is an excellent introduction for those new to scrambling in descent. No need to worry if you haven’t experienced this style of terrain before—Ledge Route is built for it, offering a manageable yet rewarding way down.
If the conditions are in your favour, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of Ben Nevis’ North Face, including the iconic Tower Gap. It’s a memorable and engaging way to wrap up your day in the mountains. The route finishes at the CIC Hut, where we then follow the North Face path back to the vehicles. By the end of the day, your legs will feel the weight of the adventure, but your head will be full of memories. Expect the entire journey from car to car to take between 9 and 11 hours.
