Embark on the Adventure of a Lifetime in Scotland's Remote Wilderness

Prepare to challenge yourself during an unparalleled adventure with Nordur. Step into the shoes of an explorer and traverse the untamed wilderness of Scotland's Fannichs and Fisherfield regions.

This expedition isn't a trip for sightseers. Although the views are phenomenal, this expedition has been meticulously crafted for adventurers who are ready to test their fitness, embrace the raw elements of nature and seek to explore Scotland's rough terrains and hidden beauties on a personal, profound level.

Over seven days, you’ll trek over 145kms, climb 16 Munros with over 6500m of ascent and cross 3 beautiful lakes on packrafts. Every expedition is ‘self-supported’, which means you’ll experience some of the unique details of a true expedition, including learning to efficiently pack your own packraft and setting up and taking down your own tent each day.

Every step of the way, you’ll be led by our founder and expert local guide, Jamie, whose passion and expertise transforms every step into a story worth telling.

With Nordur, you are not just another tourist—you are an integral part of a breathtaking expedition that will push you to your limits as you weave through majestic mountains, serene lochs, and ancient estates steeped in history.

We ensure your expedition is an authentic experience that larger, outsourced tours simply cannot match.

At Nordur, the safety and well-being of our adventurers are paramount. We are committed to providing not only a thrilling experience but also a secure one.

Our expert local guides are highly trained and experienced in wilderness navigation, emergency first aid, and risk assessment. They possess extensive knowledge of the local terrain and weather patterns, which allows them to make informed decisions on-the-go.

Before we start the expedition, you’ll be given a thorough briefing covering safety protocols, route information and emergency procedures.

We only use the very best equipment that meets international safety standards. This includes high-quality packrafts, personal location devices, GPS devices and communication tools like walkie-talkies. Your guide will go through every piece of equipment in detail with you during the expedition.

All of our expeditions are done in small groups. Not only does this give you a more personal experience, it enhances our ability to monitor and maintain safety throughout the expedition. We’re also prepared for any citation that might arise. Our guides carry satellite phones and all routes are planned with evacuation points, in case a rapid departure from the wilderness is needed.

Your Fannichs and Fisherfield Expedition Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and First Trek

Meet at Achnasheen Station, followed by a trek to Loch na Mòine Beag.

Scale Fionn Bheinn for stunning initial views, setting the stage for the days ahead.

Overnight at a base camp by Fannich Lodge woodland, prepping for the Munro challenges.

  • We meet at Achnasheen Station, a remote station serving a small village of the same name. After a kit check and look at the map to take aim of our first peaks, we are off!

Round the shoreline of the small Loch na Mòine Beag on foot - we will not get the packrafts out quite yet!

We scale the first of the Fannichs, Fionn Bheinn, which offers spectacular views of the Torridon giants, setting the stage for the days ahead.

A pathless descent leads to us to Loch Fannich, and our first packraft crossing. This is your first proper encounter with the equipment, getting to grips with the packrafting system and how to navigate it across the water. Fear not – everyone receives a detailed briefing before testing it ‘in anger’.

We set a basecamp by Fannich Lodge woodland, prepping for the Munro challenge the next day.

Day 2: The Monster Munro Challenge

A rigorous day tackling seven Munros, including Sgùrr Mòr, the highest peak of the Fannichs.

Return to base camp to rest and rejuvenate under the stars.

  • Start on the biggest day of the trip, heading deeper into the Fannich Forest wilderness and climbing 7 Munros in one epic effort. Our first two Munros are connected through a col, so we stay high on the curving, steep-flanked ridgelines.

We climb Sgùrr Mòr, the highest of the Fannichs on a magnificent ridge walk. Views are staggering: An Teallach commanding the northwest and Sgurr nan Cleach Geala close by.

We make our way into the easter half of the Fannichs mountain range, staying on high ground to climb Beinn Liath Mhor Fannaich, Meall Gorm with its distinctive corries, and An Coileachan.

Return to the comforts of base camp to rest and rejuvenate under the stars.

Day 3: Water and Peaks

Start with a paddle across serene waters followed by a hike to Lochan Sgeireach for a new base camp.

Additional Munro climbs include A’ Chailleach and Sgùrr Breac.

  • We climb the westernmost peaks of the Fannichs: A’ Chailleach 997m and Sgùrr Breac 999m, offering views over the Fisherfield and Loch Fannich. This completes all 9 of the Fannich Munros.

We make our way westwards, crossing rivers and wide terrain, past a scattering of lochans. Those gleaming deep pools will be home for the night as we set camp at Lochan Sgeireach.

Day 4: Slioch + Rest and Reflection

We’ll start the day with a reasonably straightforward ascent of the majestic Slioch.

A lighter schedule in the afternoon allows for recovery and contemplation amidst Scotland’s serene beauty.

  • Those who want to continue the ascents have the option to get three more Munros under their belts: Beinn Tarsuinn, Mullach Coire Mhic Fhearchair 1019m and Sgùrr Bàn 989m. We are now in the midst of the Fisherfields, the Great Wilderness that contains the remotest Munros in all of Scotland.

A second night spent at Lochan Sgeireach base camp.

Day 5 & Day 6: Continued Exploration

Additional paddling and Munro challenges, including the A’Mhaighdean.

Progressive interaction with the raw and rugged landscapes that define this region.

Day 7: Grand Finale

A perfect final journey from Letterewe House to Poolewe Village. You’ll paddle down the lake into a river and down to the sea, navigating the Maree, seeing features found nowhere else in the country.

We finish at the historic Shieldaig Lodge, where we will stay for the night after an evening eating delicious food and sharing our favorite moments of the epic expedition we’ve just completed whilst tasting their selection of 250 award-winning whiskeys!
