Kungsleden – Arctic Wilderness Expedition in Sweden
The Kingstrail - Traverse one of Europe’s last great wildernesses along the iconic King's Trail.
Kungsleden – Traverse the Arctic’s King of Trails and Celebrate at the Ice Hotel
Introduction:
The Kungsleden, known as the ‘King of Trails,’ offers one of the most remote and beautiful trekking experiences in Europe. Located deep within the Arctic Circle, this adventure will take you through a landscape of frozen lakes, towering mountains, and vast valleys. For eight months of the year, the trail is covered in snow, providing a pristine environment for an unforgettable self-supported journey by snowshoe or ski.
As you journey along the Kungsleden, you’ll stay in a series of remote huts, each offering a warm refuge from the cold. Life in the huts is simple yet deeply rewarding: water is collected by drilling through the thick ice to reach rivers running deep below the surface, and you can clean off in traditional Swedish saunas before cooling down with a roll in the snow. These huts are stocked with provisions from the warden’s hut, where you can even purchase a nice cold beer after a long day on the trail—an unexpected but welcome luxury in the heart of the Arctic wilderness.
One of the greatest highlights of travelling this far north is the chance to witness the northern lights. Kungsleden is one of the best places in the world to see this natural spectacle, thanks to its remote location, clear skies, and the long, dark Arctic nights. Far from artificial light pollution, the trail offers perfect conditions for viewing the aurora borealis as it dances across the sky in shades of green, purple, and red. It’s a truly awe-inspiring experience that adds an extra layer of magic to the journey.
Your adventure begins in Kiruna, a town with a rich mining heritage. Kiruna has been a centre for iron ore extraction for over a century, and its underground mine is one of the largest in the world. The mining activity has caused such significant shifts in the earth that the town is being moved, piece by piece, to safer ground. This fascinating glimpse into the intersection of human industry and nature is a fitting start to your journey, where you’ll experience both the power of the wilderness and the ingenuity required to thrive in such a remote, harsh environment.
At the end of the expedition, you'll have the opportunity to visit the world-famous Ice Hotel for a celebration. After completing your Arctic journey, raise a glass in the Icebar, a striking venue crafted from ice, to toast your adventure before returning home.
With the chance to spot reindeer and elk along the trail, this expedition offers both a physical challenge and a deep connection with the wild Arctic landscape, all while immersing you in the cultural and industrial history of northern Sweden.

Your Kungsleden Expedition Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Kiruna
Arrive in Kiruna, Sweden’s northernmost town, steeped in mining history and surrounded by Arctic wilderness. You’ll meet the rest of the group at 7:30 pm for a detailed briefing, final kit check, and an overview of the journey ahead. After the briefing, enjoy a warm dinner and a chance to settle into your hotel, where you can relax in comfort before heading into the wild. This is the perfect opportunity to prepare mentally for the adventure to come.
Day 2: Abisko to Abiskojaure (15km)
Our expedition begins as we to the train from Kiruna to the trailhead in Abisko, a town famed for its stunning views and access to the northern lights. From here, we start the trek through birch forests, following the fast-flowing Abiskojakka River. The path gradually ascends, offering views of the surrounding snow-covered peaks. By late afternoon, we reach Lake Abiskojaure, where a remote hut awaits us by the shore. You’ll feel the warmth of wood fires as we settle in for the night, with a hearty meal to fuel the next day’s trek.
Day 3: Abiskojaure to Alesjaure (20km)
Today, we push deeper into the Arctic wilderness, with the terrain becoming more rugged as we climb into the high mountains. Panoramic views of glaciers and snow-covered peaks open up as we ascend, and the silence of the wilderness becomes all-encompassing. Along the way, we pass by Sami settlements, learning about the indigenous culture that thrives in this harsh environment. By evening, we arrive at the Alesjaure Hut, where you can reward yourself with a sauna—a perfect way to unwind after a long day on the trail.
Day 4: Alesjaure to Tjäktja Hut (13km)
We begin today’s journey by crossing moraine fields and navigating through undulating terrain, with the chance to spot reindeer herds grazing in the distance. As we climb higher, the landscape becomes even more dramatic, with the jagged peaks surrounding us. Tonight, we stay at the Tjäktja Hut, the highest hut on the Kungsleden. The solitude here is striking, as we are completely immersed in the vast Arctic wilderness.
Day 5: Tjäktja Hut to Salka (12km)
Today marks a key point in our journey as we ascend the Tjäktja Pass, the highest point of the trail at 1,140m. The climb is rewarded with sweeping views down into the Tjakavagge Valley, a stunning sight framed by towering mountains and glaciers. The descent into the valley is a long but steady trek, bringing us to the Salka Hut, which sits perched on a small outcrop with breathtaking views along the valley. Here, we rest for the night in this remote haven.
Day 6: Salka to Singi (13km)
Today’s journey is a more relaxed one, allowing us to enjoy the spectacular scenery of the Tjakavagge Valley. We follow the trail southwards, with the snow-capped Kebnekaise massif dominating the skyline to the east. As we move closer to Singi, the terrain begins to level out, giving us time to reflect on the journey so far. We overnight at the rustic Singi Hut, where we rest and refuel, ready for the final push towards Kebnekaise.
Day 7: Singi to Kebnekaise (14km)
On our last full day of trekking, we enter the dramatic Laddjubahta Canyon. The towering walls of the canyon, coupled with the views of the Kebnekaise massif, make this one of the most memorable sections of the trail. By afternoon, we reach the Kebnekaise Mountain Station, where we’re greeted with the welcome comforts of showers, saunas, and a hot meal in the restaurant. This is a well-deserved rest after days of remote travel, offering a chance to relax and celebrate the achievements of the past week.
Day 8: Skidoo Transfer and Ice Hotel Visit
After a restful night, we trade trekking for an exhilarating skidoo adventure. You’ll get a hands-on introduction to driving a skidoo as we zip across frozen lakes and snow-covered valleys. Speed through the Arctic wilderness with the snow-covered mountains as your backdrop, taking in the sights and sounds of this pristine environment. The day ends with a visit to the world-famous Ice Hotel, where we’ll toast to the success of our journey with a celebratory drink in the Icebar—a striking venue crafted entirely from ice and snow. Spend the night in Kiruna, reflecting on the adventure over dinner.
