Master Essential Climbing Skills: Belay Building, Gear Placement, Lead Confidence, and Self-Rescue

Overview:
Based in Gairloch, we’re fortunate to have access to a vast number of high-quality crags within a short drive. These offer a variety of sport and trad climbing opportunities (see the green tags below each showing a different climbing crag).

The Valley Crag experience is ideal for climbers who are competent seconds and are looking to take their skills to the next level. With a short approach of less than 45 minutes, these crags offer both sport and trad climbing options. This course can be as skills-focused or as guiding-oriented as you like—whether you’re aiming to refine technical skills or simply want to enjoy some of the classic routes in the area, the day will be tailored to suit your goals.

Who is it for?
This course is designed for those who already have experience as a second and want to progress to leading climbs or gain a deeper understanding of technical skills like stacked abseils, prussiks, and rope management.

We’ll work with you on a range of skills to help you progress:

  • Creating Belays: Improve your ability to build effective belays using various techniques. You’ll learn how to tie in with ropes, set up a master point, and apply systems like two-to-one. We’ll also cover both direct and indirect belays, using methods such as ABC (Anchor, Belay, Climber) and IDEAS (Independent, Directional, Equalised, Angled, Solid) to ensure your belays are secure and efficient.

  • Gear Placement and Equipment Checks: Gain a deeper understanding of placing gear correctly and performing thorough equipment checks. Learn how to assess placements for safety, maintain your equipment, and understand when it’s time to replace or retire certain gear.

  • Stacked Abseils and Prussiks: Master advanced abseiling techniques, including stacked abseils for multi-pitch descents, and prussik to replace safety rope. These skills will help you handle complex abseiling scenarios with confidence.

  • Self-Rescue Skills: Prepare yourself for potential emergencies by learning key self-rescue techniques. You’ll practice tying off the belay plate, lowering climbers safely, and escaping the belay system when necessary, ensuring you’re prepared for unexpected situations.

  • Confidence in Lead Climbing: Build the confidence to lead climbs and safely catch leader falls. I’ll be on a fixed line next to you, providing a safety net and guidance if things become stressful, allowing you to gradually gain the experience you need before fully committing to leading on your own.

Crag Choices and Route Selection: Learn to interpret guidebooks and select routes that match your ambitions and the day’s conditions. We’ll explore different crag choices based on weather conditions and help you understand how to make informed decisions when planning your climbing day.
